Today we finally learned when the final volume of SCOTT PILGRIM (‘s FINEST HOUR!) hits the world. I’m so excited, I’ve been excited for years. It’s no secret that I love this series, and frankly, Scott Pilgrim changed my life.
I never read comics as a kid. Well, funny papers aside (and for the record, before you read anything else, keep in mind that I’ve ALWAYS wanted to be a cartoonist. Save Kindergarten, when I wanted to be a chef. So as you read feel free to scratch your head, because I do all the time.).
I always preferred superheroes in animation so I didn’t bother with comics. I didn’t like floppies (to this day) so I never invested in them. The closest thing to manga I grew up with was Pokemon, and though I did catch ‘em all, I never looked further into the.. genre? style? art-form, well anyway – not to mention that I was still completely unaware of webcomics. But then a few years ago (2006ish) a friend grabbed my face and told me to read the first three volumes of this stupid comic book. Except they weren’t floppies, they were cool little digests. And they weren’t about superheroes, and the art was goofy and cartoony and fun. So I said fine, plunked down one night in a comfy chair and started reading. I didn’t know it the next morning, but my face was missing. It had blown away.
After that I was sold on comics, since then I’ve digested virtually everything put in front of me. Not long after reading Scott Pilgrim Volumes 1-3 I discovered webcomics and since then I’ve never looked back. Once in a great while, like today, I think about where I might be if I hadn’t read Scott Pilgrim and if I hadn’t fallen for comics the way I have. In some ways I’m fully aware that I WOULD be better off, at least compared to my current situation. But then I look at my computer screen and I see these goofy monsters I’m drawing and the comics I’m making, and it just feels right. It’s hard and messy and I still have miles and miles to trek before I get anywhere, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. So yeah, Scott Pilgrim changed my life – and I’m forever grateful for it.
(It comes out in July and a movie based on the books hits in August starring Michael Cera. Not to mention a video game that is coinciding with the movie release – surely 2010 will be the summer of Scott Pilgrim. I can’t fucking wait.)
